MISSION

To restore the former Cape Lookout Coast Guard Station so that it may serve as a place of education and recreation welcoming any and all people open to learning about and enjoying the natural wonders of the Cape Lookout National Seashore.

Founding

The Cape Lookout Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization which was officially established in July 2022 by a group of life-long Cape Lookout National Seashore enthusiasts united behind the purpose of improving, preserving, and sharing this national treasure.

Initiatives: Building Restoration + Programming + Overnight Retreats

Restoration

The Coast Guard Station was originally built in 1916 serving primarily as an outpost responsible for rescue services along Cape Lookout Shoals.  The station operated until 1982 and has since been under the stewardship of the National Park Service.  The Cape Lookout Foundation has signed a 20-year lease with the NPS affording the opportunity 1) to renovate the existing station and adjacent galley building, and 2) to organize/host educational and recreational activities available to public and private groups alike.  Special emphasis will be placed on engaging groups of children and adults who might not otherwise have either awareness and/or means to visit a remote federal park.

Programing

All visitors will have the opportunity to customize their experience by determining duration of stay—day trip or overnight—and by selecting from a range of available activities for up to 26 people.  HVAC and ensuite baths are available in each of the four upstairs quarters. Program coordinators directly affiliated with The Cape Lookout Foundation, as well as local leaders including NC Maritime Museum’s Keith Rittmaster and his 18 years of experience at Cape Lookout, will organize activities that emphasize the experience of the natural environment through study of local eco-systems, all resident marine and terrestrial wildlife, environmental preservation, as well as enjoyment of fishing, boating, hiking, camping, and swimming.

Collaboration / Legacy

The Cape Lookout Foundation intends to amplify programming initiatives by cooperating with local charitable organizations whose missions are similarly aligned to enhance public access, involvement, and personal connection to The Cape Lookout National Seashore, ensuring its preservation for future generations.

Contributions

All restoration efforts will be funded entirely through monetary and in-kind donations.  The cost to renovate and initiate programming is estimated to be $1,750,000 which includes a $500,000 building self insurance fund .

Operational costs will be covered by revenue from ongoing programming activities and overnight lodging fees.  Any excess cash flow will be used to support charitable groups wishing to access Cape Lookout Foundation programming.
